Wired Network (10/100 Fast Ethernet)
Networks allow for file sharing from one computer to another. A network port is needed for each device with an Ethernet connection. This includes desktop computers, notebook computers, wireless access points, Control4 products like touchpanels, etc. Printer(s) can be added to the network via a print server. With a print server, the printers can be accessed from any network computer. New printers often come with an Ethernet jack and do not require a print server.

Wireless:
A wireless network means you don't have to use an Ethernet cable to connect a computer to the network. This allows current homeowners to add (wireless) networking capabilities with little or no retrofit cost. Range of the wireless network depends on the size of the house, construction of the home, surrounding interference. Frame houses can get better range than concrete homes/condominums. 1/2" drywall is usually better than plaster walls. Encryption includes one or more of the following, MAC filtering, WEP 128bit, WPA, WPA2.
Gigabit Wired Network (10/100/1000 Ethernet):
Gigabit networks upgrade the standard network of 10/100 Mbps to 1000 Mbps. This is recommended for clients with high network traffic needs, large file-sharing like CAD files, streaming video, daily backup hard drives onto another computer, online video games. A gigabit network can reduce the backup time by 10 fold.
